New Car| BYD launches hybrid pickup- BYD Shark in Mexico
On May 14, BYD, the leader in electric vehicles (EVs) in China launched its first pickup BYD Shark in Mexico. It is the first time the world's largest electric-vehicle (EV) automaker has launched a new product outside its home country.
The Company released BYD Shark’s price, performance specifications, production location, and more information on the mid-size hybrid-electric vehicle, which is heavily derived from the BYD Bao Leopard 5 SUV.
There are 2 variants to be chosen in North America Nation, with a starting price of 899,980 pesos (RM251,600) for the Shark GL and 969,800 pesos (RM271,000) for the premium Shark GS.
The Shark is 5457mm long, 1971mm wide, and 1,925 mm tall, being offered in 3 colors, Pallas White, Marmara Black, and Atlantis Gray.
With 3 terrain modes-Sand, Mud, and Snow, the Shark has a maximum towing capacity of 2500kg, 835kg payload, and 1450L cargo volume.
The Shark is powered by a DMO-off-road plug-in super hybrid platform, completely revolutionizing fuel-powered pickup. With a 1.5T high power engine and more than 430 horsepower, the Shark can get from zero to 100 km/h within just 5.7s, and the fuel consumption is rated at 7.5L/100km on the NEDC cycle.
With a 29.58 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the Shark can provide a combined range (NEDC) of 840km and an electric range(NEDC) of 100km, charging from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes.
Equipped with a 12.8-inch multimedia rotating screen and 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel from the BYD Dolphin. The Shark has a “Hi BYD” voice command system, Mobile phone interconnection, the Karaoke function, Mobile phone NFC key, 360° panoramic view camera, a 180° sub-chassis camera, 50W Wireless smartphone charging, a 12-inch head-up display.
The Shark strengthens BYD's foothold in the North American market and will go head-to-head in Mexico with compact and medium-sized pick-up trucks such as the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger.
According to the report, Chinese Electric Vehicle brands account for about 87% of EV sales in South America and 20 % in Mexico. BYD is considering building an EV plant in Mexico.
